Learning how to edit video is an art. Cutting together footage does not make you an editor… Really, it doesn’t. Having a HDSLR or mini DV camera, owning a copy (bootleg or legal) of Premiere or Vegas, or having shot some rinky dink local music video does not make you an editor either. Editing is a matter of story telling using visuals to send the message and move the concept forward.
There are a lot of techniques and skills that are pulled together when one is telling a written story and the same applies for one done using motion. In this “Chopping Block” segment for Indy Mogul, Russell Hasenauer lists a few options one should consider when putting a piece together. There are no hard fast rules carved in stone but these editing techniques should come in handy for many of you looking to step your video reel up with some well composed scenes.
